The village of Penderyn is situated at the head of the Cynon Valley and on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The nearest town is Aberdare (6 miles) but Penderyn also offers easy access to the market town of Brecon (18 miles), and the cities of Cardiff (30 miles)and Swansea (25 miles).

The village has a church and two chapels but unfortunately none of these provide services, and the Soar Chapel is now the home of The Penderyn Furniture Company. An eco-friendly primary school, built in 2007, helps to keep the village alive as does the Community Centre. Traditional industries are continued at the local quarry and occasionally at Penderyn Sheep Market.

There are two pubs - The Lamb Hotel and The Red Lion - and Penderyn is also home to Penderyn Whisky Distillery & Visitor Centre.
